ST CROIX, USVI: Governor John deJongh basked in what is viewed as the crowning achievement of his administration to date on Wednesday night, when the Legislature of the US Virgin Islands voted 10-5 in favor of awarding a 30 year contractual agreement with international spirits company, Diageo PLC.

ST THOMAS, USVI: Government House announced on Monday that, following last week’s formal submittal of the Diageo agreement to the Legislature, the documents which detail the proposed 30-year agreement between the US Virgin Islands government and Diageo are now available for public review online.

Third murder suspect advised of rights in USVI

ST THOMAS, USVI: Twenty- year- old Jahlil Ward of St John was advised of his rights in a St Thomas VI Superior Court on Monday, on charges of First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault and Using a Dangerous Weapon in Commission of a Crime of Violence. The charges stem from a June 19, 2007 stabbing death.

US Postal Inspector General begins USVI investigation

ST THOMAS, USVI: Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen announced on Tuesday that she has been advised by the Office of the US Postal Service’s Inspector General that it has begun its investigation into her charges that the level of mail service in the US Virgin Islands is unacceptable.

USVI's St Thomas to be first port of call for new mega cruise ship

ST THOMAS, USVI: Royal Caribbean has announced their new mega-ship Oasis of the Seas will make Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, its first port of call on its 2009 itinerary. The one billion-dollar luxury liner will bring 5,400 guests to St Thomas when it launches in December 2009.

US House of Representatives approves funds for key USVI projects

ST THOMAS, USVI: The House Appropriations Committee has included $1.45 million in special project funding for the US Virgin Islands in the first two spending bills reported by the Committee in the FY 2009 appropriations process. The two bills include funding for a new "911" emergency communications system.

USVI Governor calls Special Legislative Session for Diageo distillery

ST CROIX, USVI: Governor John deJongh Thursday submitted legislation to the US Virgin Islands Senate which, if enacted, will realize the most significant economic development project in the Territory in fifty years. The legislation would ratify the agreement entered into with Diageo for the construction of a distillery.

ST THOMAS, USVI: Governor John deJongh has announced the results of the Territory’s community-wide voting to select a design for the US Virgin Islands Commemorative Quarter. The deadline for input on the final selection ended on Friday, June 13, 2008. The “VI Beauty” is a geographical rendition of the Virgin Islands.

Former aide to USVI governor sentenced to eight years in prison

ST THOMAS, USVI: Superior Court Judge James Carroll III sentenced Alric Simmonds, a former aide to former US Virgin Islands Governor Charles Turnbull, to eight years in prison on Friday, on charges of conversion of government property, embezzlement or falsification of public accounts, and grand larceny.

USVI to regulate price increases for gasoline products

ST THOMAS, USVI: Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) Commissioner Kenrick Robertson on Thursday, issued an order to gasoline wholesalers and retailers in the US Virgin Islands establishing a procedure for fuel price increases. Robertson’s order spells out requirements for written authorization.

USVI governor signs legislation to promote economic development

ST THOMAS, USVI: Governor John deJongh on Tuesday approved legislation implementing tax increment financing in the US Virgin Islands. USVI governor and attorney general tour correctional facility

The unannounced visit marked the first time in recent history that a USVI governor visited the prison.

Supermarkets in USVI fined for deceptive trade practices

ST CROIX, USVI: The owners of two Pueblo supermarkets on St Croix in the US Virgin Islands were fined after inspectors from the USVI Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) found instances where the stores had engaged in deceptive pricing.  Fines totaling more than $23,000 were assessed.
