Britain remains of sufficient importance to countries of the Caribbean that many of them will be deeply interested in how the change of prime minister from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown will affect them. The one person of Caribbean origin in the Blair Cabinet, Baroness Valerie Amos, has gone but another person of Caribbean origin has joined Brown’s Cabinet - Baroness Patricia Scotland.

One Moment Please — Still no Education commissioner; deJongh resists ‘artificial time line’

It has been more than six months since the Department of Education has gone without a permanent commissioner at the helm. Not that the appointment of one would suddenly transform a defective system overnight, but would contribute over time to the transformation of a behemoth to one that is more manageable.

Today is exactly one year since the Congress of the United States granted a charter to the Virgin Islands under the official designation called the Organic Act. This new instrument stands, it is generally believed, firmer than the Danish Colonial Law, which was applied to these parts in 1906.
